Man of the Decade?
If it was for man who affected the events of this decade the most (9/11 response, Katrina response, Iraq War, Financial Crisis), I would have to go with Man of the Decade being Dick Cheney, with an intertwined second being Osama Bin Laden.
If it was for the men and women who affected a longer history the most this decade, here’s a few, depending on contingencies:
Al Gore (if climate change...

Questions of the night
Does Barack Obama ever use the internet? Or a computer? Has he typed on a keyboard in the past year?
Do you think Barack Obama will ever see a YouTube video in the next three years? Or visit some Wikipedia page?
It’s not that he’s above it or anything. It’s just that lingering question of what the President has to do. Doesn’t he have someone to do all that for him? ...
Let's appreciate the decade
Hey everyone. I think we should start the process of appreciating that a decade is coming to a close. The 2000s! They’re over. We need to start analyzing! Anyone up for starting some decade superlative debates on our Tumblrs?
I’ll start:
Best (mainstream) song of the decade:

Stifling Irony.
From my daily “Ralph Nader” news feed::
“In Chuck Klosterman’s new book, Eating The Dinosaur, he has an essay about the admirable, terrifying insanity of the literal-minded. (The examples he gives are Ralph Nader, Werner Herzog and, perhaps inevitably, Rivers Cuomo.) He argues that we, irony-drenched mass culture consumers, cannot wrap our minds around such doggedly earnest...

Thoughts on the Town Hall Meeting Protests
The protests at the August congressional town hall meetings are a failing of civic education and civic efficacy inspiration. These people (not the corporations/RNC that are organizing them…the protestors themselves) feel like they have no power and so they yell and scream. I personally find it crazy to feel like “The government is controlling us” because we are the government. ...
Prepping for Entry Level Position or Long Term...
I always liked the statement that people who are resume-padders or networkers are prepping for their entry level position, as opposed to their long term success. For example, shallow title-grubbing without thought or learning will get you into a good college, but it won’t give you the skills/mindsets to succeed and get the best out of college; networking might get you a good opening job in...

Favorite quote: “If conservatives get to call universal health care ‘socialized medicine,’ I get to call private health care ‘soulless vampires making money off human pain.’ The problem with President Obama’s health care plan isn’t socialism, it’s capitalism.”
Made me think:
An argument against non-market solutions to problems is that the...

A Capitalism Based on Value Creation
Us Progressives don’t hate capitalism. We just think it should be based on creating value, not profits…creating quality products in the public interest and receiving a fair and sustainable reward for your efforts. Umair Haque puts it nicely:
The Generation M Manifesto
Dear Old People Who Run the World,
My generation would like to break up with you.
Everyday, I see a widening gap...
Indy Mags
I don’t know why this thought just entered my head, but:
I think we should all subscribe to independent magazines. We read Time and Newsweek and Entertainment Weekly and the Economist and they have Fareed Zakaria and all these great people. But, in the end, I bet any of the top 5% of writers in America are worth reading. And all these people between .02% and 5% are lost to indy mags. ...
